The problem of noise in tunnels

When a train or vehicle passes through a tunnel, a large amount of noise is generated that is not easily dissipated. This is largely due to the tunnel walls' inability to absorb sound waves. Although these surfaces are structurally strong, their acoustic performance is very poor.

Therefore, sound continually bounces throughout the tunnel, amplifying the sensation of noise. This not only harms users but also those living near the infrastructure. Therefore, it is essential to implement specific solutions that mitigate this reverberation and improve acoustic comfort efficiently and sustainably.

Custom-designed sound-absorbing solutions

At INSAMETAL, we have been working for years on the design, manufacture, and installation of sound-absorbing systems for tunnels. These elements are designed to adapt to each environment, as not all tunnels have the same conditions.

Our models combine profiled and perforated sheet metal in the area exposed to noise with a rock wool core that effectively absorbs sound waves. In many cases, a second opaque sheet is added on the back to ensure greater mechanical strength and durability. This provides a comprehensive solution that combines sound insulation and structural solidity.

It's worth noting that all our products carry the CE mark, ensuring they meet the most demanding European standards. If you're interested in learning more about this certification, you can visit this website. Official Guide to the Construction Products Regulation of the European Commission.

Effective sound insulation thanks to prior analysis

Before proceeding with the installation, we always conduct a thorough technical study. This analysis is crucial, as it allows us to identify which type of system is most suitable for the specific conditions of each tunnel. Working on deteriorated surfaces is not the same as working on new surfaces; nor is treating an urban tunnel the same as a railway tunnel.

Based on the results, we select the most effective panel type, whether single-sided perforated, a mixed configuration, or a fully enclosed system. This ensures that the solution not only reduces noise but also integrates well into the existing structure.

Thanks to this approach, we achieved a significant reduction in reflected sound, while improving the overall acoustic quality of the environment.
